“Jet black hair—poker straight—fell about the backless dress as he moved to her. Transfixed by the curve of her spine, the glimpse of rib; as though every muscle in her body was under her complete command. Daniel reached out, not quite sure what he was going to say. But the moment his finger touched the skin of her shoulder, she turned and grabbed his balls so tightly, his vision gained a vignette and he crumpled to the floor.”

“Can you tell him–”

“What?”

“Tell him… you’ll be good.”

“What?”

“Promise him!”

“Okay, okay!” said Emily, not knowing what this was. A test, perhaps? She looked at the bear. It looked strong. But also, kind.

Emily realised it loved her. She felt safe. She smiled at the bear. “I promise I’ll be good.”
